Uzun yıllardır neredeyse bütün insanlığın merak ettiği bir konu vardı. Bu konu kısaca, dünya dışında yaşayan varlıkların olup, olmadığı konusudur.
Teknolojinin gelişmesiyle birlikte insanlar, daha öncesinde sadece gökyüzüne bakarak görmeye çalıştığı gezegen, krater veya güneş sistemini teknolojinin gelişmesi ile daha yakından inceleme fırsatı buldu. Daha öncesinde ki çalışmalar genel olarak Dünya'nın uydusu olan Ay ile ilgiliyken; 1950 sonralarından itibaren gözler Mars isimli gezegene çevrildi. 1950 sonrasında başlayan Mars çalışmaları sonucunda, Mars'ın yörüngesine birçok uzay aracı yollandı. Belki de ilk başlarda sadece Mars'a ulaşmak olan bu görevler sonrasında yerini Mars'ın yapısını ve geçmişini araştırmaya dönüştü.
Bu araştırmalar kapsamında Mars'ın yörüngesine bir çok uzay aracı ve uydu gönderildi. Son bir ayda ise Çin ve BAE kendi uzay araçlarını fırlattılar.

7 ay öncesinde yani 30 Temmuz 2020 tarihinde ise NASA bir fırlatma gerçekleştirmişti. Gerçekleştirmiş olduğu fırlatmanın görev ismi ise "MARS 2020" idi. Sonrasında bu isim değiştirilerek Gezgin anlamında kullanılan "PERSEVERANCE" olmuştur. Bu, Perseverance isimli uzay keşif aracı ve görev, bu zamana kadar fırlatılmış uzay araçları ve görevleri arasında en iyisi ve en umut vericisi olmuştur.
